To lead in creating sustainable chemical solutions that power circular economies, renewable energy systems, and environmental stewardship—delivering innovations that matter for generations to come.
We are a collaborative research team at the University of Sydney, bringing together the expertise of Professor Thomas Maschmeyer, Dr Alexander Yuen, and Professor Anthony Masters. Our shared mission is simple yet ambitious: to use chemistry as a force for sustainability and innovation.
Our work spans catalysis, advanced materials, and process intensification, tackling global challenges in renewable energy, resource recovery, and circular economy systems. We design catalysts with precision—guided by the principle of “selectivity tuning by active site design”—to make chemical transformations cleaner, more efficient, and scalable.
Key areas of research include:
We believe chemistry should serve both knowledge and society. That means pushing the boundaries of science while ensuring our discoveries translate into real-world impact. Through companies that have been co-founded (Licella Holdings) or spun-out from our laboratory (Gelion plc, the university’s first publicly listed start-up) —we turn ideas into technologies that enable a cleaner, more resilient world.
Our group has received many awards. The most recent example is Thomas' 2025 Eureka Award:
